Taxi with Little Berries!!

This “ita-taxi” (taxi with manga or anime characters) started to offer service just three days ago

(August 26th)!!

Three “Little Berries” on the bonnet/hood.

Little Berries are characters that represent berries in Hokkaido:

chokeberry, seaberry, and blue-berried honeysuckle.

A map of Hokkaido on the roof of the car.

It says “vacant”.

You might want to use this taxi.  (The driver was a nice person, by the way.)

Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burger

August 29, 2012 Leave a comment

Again I had a Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burger in Betsukai town.

This scallop hamburger won the first place at the “New Hokkaido local gourmet grand prix”

in 2010, 2011 and 2012!

This plate comes with fresh milk of Betsukai.

I was asked to have 300-millilitter glass of milk or 500 (the price is the same)

so I chose 500 ml without hesitation.

But it turned out that 300 ml glass of milk would come with an illustrated original coaster

featuring “Betsukai Milk Girl”!

From when did they start this!?  (Oops, it says from April this year)

Betsukai Milk Girls.  Hmm.

15 Shima Park

30 degrees celsius!  It’s too hot for cycling.

Well, but perhaps it wouldn’t be hurt too much if it’s not a long distance ride.

Driving in Hokkaido with a Dog

August 29, 2012 Leave a comment

Driving in Hokkaido with a dog is actually not so difficult.

Some parking areas on the express way have a dog run.

There are hotels where you can stay with your pet.

This is “Hotel 946” in Kushiro.

And this is “Shinfuji Ryokan”, a Japanese style inn, also in Kushiro.

In a Japanese room of “Shinfuji Ryokan”.

How will be the weather tomorrow?

In the car.

But mostly she is sleeping in the car.

This is a typical road in eastern Hokkaido.

Long, straight road with few cars.

And the trip continues…

Canoeing Down the Kushiro River — With a Dog!

August 28, 2012 Leave a comment

Last summer we enjoyed canoeing at the Kushiro River from Lake Toro to Hoso’oka.

It was so much fun, so we tried again this summer — this time starting from Lake Kussharo,

and with our dog!

Our guide is Yasui Gaku san (just like the last summer), an excellent canoe instructor

of Akan Nature Center:

Our dog is a little bit nervous on the canoe.

Lake Kussharo, the largest caldera lake in Japan and the source of the Kushiro River.

In winter, the lake will be frozen all over and a lot of whooper swans visit there.

Now it’s summer; no ice, no swans, but the water was still cold enough.

Wearing a life jacket, she’s ready!

The water in the upper stretches of the Kushiro river is quite clear and beautiful.

We saw fish splashing in the water many times, and also a kingfisher and a white-tailed eagle.

Let’s take a break for a while…

Will she say yes to canoe down the river again next summer?

Please say yes!!
