Aomori Revisited

September 25, 2012 Leave a comment

Again I was in Aomori Prefecture to prepare for my next work.

The picture above shows “Kusumike jutaku” (house of the Kusumi family) built in 1886

in Goshogawara city, Aomori Prefecture.

This is the gallery of “Tsugaru kanayama yaki” (Tsugaru kanayama pottery),

a well-known local pottery.

Inside of the gallery.

Tsugaru Kanayama Pottery Dog!

Kilns.  The place provides a hands-on experience.

Visitors can buy freshly made potteries with inexpensive prices.

The Inner East Gate of Hirosaki Castle in Hirosaki City.

Hirosaki Castle.  Built in 1810.

The mascot character of Hirosaki Castle, “Takamaru-kun”.

He says “Welcome to Hirosaki Castle: Hirosaki is the city of castle, cherry blossoms, and apples”.

The castle is in the Hirosaki Park.

Goshogawara Tachineputa!!

At “Tachineputa no Yakata” (Tachineputa museum), visitors can look at three 22m high lantern floats

that are used for the traditional annual Neputa festival of Goshogawara city.

Amazingly high!  The good thing about this museum is that visitors can not only see

all those “Tachineputa” but also learn about the history of this traditional festival

and people’s passion and efforts to revive Tachineputa.

Seiryu-ji (Seiryu Temple) in Aomori city, Aomori Prefecture.

Five-story pagoda at Seiryu Temple.

Showa Daibutsu (Great Showa Buddha).

This bronze 21.35 meter high 220 tons statue was built in 1984.

“Nebuta no Sato” (the villege of nebuta).

Visitors can look at lantern floats (nebuta) that were used for the

Nebuta festival in Aomori city.

Beautiful and strong Aomori “Nebuta”, and a bit different from Goshogawara “Tachineputa”.

Aomori city can be seen from the mountain station of ropeway at Mt. Hakkoda.

Driving in Hokkaido with a Dog

August 29, 2012 Leave a comment

Driving in Hokkaido with a dog is actually not so difficult.

Some parking areas on the express way have a dog run.

There are hotels where you can stay with your pet.

This is “Hotel 946” in Kushiro.

And this is “Shinfuji Ryokan”, a Japanese style inn, also in Kushiro.

In a Japanese room of “Shinfuji Ryokan”.

How will be the weather tomorrow?

In the car.

But mostly she is sleeping in the car.

This is a typical road in eastern Hokkaido.

Long, straight road with few cars.

And the trip continues…

Canoeing Down the Kushiro River — With a Dog!

August 28, 2012 Leave a comment

Last summer we enjoyed canoeing at the Kushiro River from Lake Toro to Hoso’oka.

It was so much fun, so we tried again this summer — this time starting from Lake Kussharo,

and with our dog!

Our guide is Yasui Gaku san (just like the last summer), an excellent canoe instructor

of Akan Nature Center:

Our dog is a little bit nervous on the canoe.

Lake Kussharo, the largest caldera lake in Japan and the source of the Kushiro River.

In winter, the lake will be frozen all over and a lot of whooper swans visit there.

Now it’s summer; no ice, no swans, but the water was still cold enough.

Wearing a life jacket, she’s ready!

The water in the upper stretches of the Kushiro river is quite clear and beautiful.

We saw fish splashing in the water many times, and also a kingfisher and a white-tailed eagle.

Let’s take a break for a while…

Will she say yes to canoe down the river again next summer?

Please say yes!!

Golden Slumbers

My dog was apparently sleepy on my lap.

And soon she fell asleep.

Wow, a Snow Miku mouse pad can be a good pillow for a dog!

My (Dog’s) Favorite Things

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens –well, not exactly.

My dog loves legs of a chair…

…and stuffed animals  (the picture above is a former stuffed animal).

Also a limited version of _K-on_’s chocolate box!

Can you see the bite marks on the four corners on the box?

Fortunately, the inside of the box was safe (chocolate is not good for a dog).

So, I didn’t have a choice but to eat all the chocolate inside and to hurry on

to Lawson to get the new one!

Walking on a Winter Wonderland

January 15, 2012 Leave a comment

Today we have another snowy day in Sapporo!

Sapporo has 5 or 6 meters of snow in one winter.

She (miniature dachshund above) might want a little bit longer legs.
